The bars in your status bar are drawn by the operating system from radio measurements that phones do not expose to apps. On iPhone there is simply no public way for any third-party app to read cellular or Wi-Fi signal strength. Apps that claim to "boost" your signal or measure your bars precisely are guessing — or worse, making it up.
pingVu is deliberately honest about this: it never pretends to read the bars. Instead, it measures something more useful — whether your connection actually works.
pingVu observes your device's connection state through the system's network-status indicators: whether a usable route exists over cellular or Wi-Fi, and whether that path looks constrained or expensive. It watches these paths change in real time — cellular and Wi-Fi independently, because your phone attaches to a cell tower and a Wi-Fi access point as separate paths with separate quality.
That's how pingVu can tell you "Wi-Fi is back, cellular still down" — and alert on each with its own sound and haptic profile.
A path appearing isn't the same as a connection working — everyone who's stared at full bars while nothing loads knows the difference. So before telling you service is back, pingVu opens a real secure connection, over the specific network being checked, to a stable, highly available server. Only a connection that actually completes counts as "usable."
An alert from pingVu means traffic really flowed. And pingVu times that verification — how fast the secure connection completed — which feeds the quality tier it shows you ("verified in 0.6 s").
Every quality claim in pingVu is an app-defined, validated tier. They're a useful relative guide built from real evidence — never a claim of signal-bar accuracy.
Tiers are computed from whether a validated connection succeeded, how long it took, and whether the path is constrained or expensive — all public signals.
pingVu also shows the radio type your phone is registered on (5G, LTE, 3G). Registration means your phone is camped on a cell tower — a prerequisite for ordinary calls — but it is not a measure of call quality. The data rows are different: they reflect pingVu's own verified connection checks. The app shows both, labeled honestly, because they answer different questions: "can I probably call?" vs. "does data actually work?"
pingVu's quality-history graph shows gaps where no samples were collected rather than drawing a fake line through them. If the app wasn't watching, the graph says so. The same principle runs through everything: the estimated call quality score is labeled as an estimate (a MOS score computed from ping, jitter, and packet loss using the industry-standard ITU-T E-model — no call is ever placed), and SignalScout's direction hints are described as "rough direction based on your recent path," because that's what they are.
